ILGerants – New Ionic Liquids Based Mixtures for Absorption Refrigeration
Abstract
Energy-efficient cooling concepts play an important role for numerous applications in
comfort and industrial cooling, covering the cooling demand in a sustainable manner
with a drastically reduced carbon footprint. An enormous amount of heat energy is
daily dissipated to atmosphere as low temperature waste heat from industrial and
electric power plants. This energy cannot be used in any useful heating operation but
can be used as driving heat of absorption heat pumps for refrigeration.
The research of new working pairs for absorption chillers considering IL as absorbents, appears promising in overcoming the drawbacks of some absorbents. This project will contribute to the definition of new refrigeration mixtures, based on ionic liquids, non-toxic and environmentally biodegradable, alternatives to the actual fluids used in industry, namely water+ LIBr and water + NH3, as they have negligible vapor pressures, greater heat capacity, variable viscosities, and cost/efficient.
